Ingredients
  

  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil extra virgin
  • vegetable oil for frying - (traditionally olive oil in Crete)
  • honey (for drizzling)
  • cinnamon and walnuts (optional toppings)

Instructions
 

Activate the yeast

  • In a bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.

Make the dough

  • In a mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, and olive oil.
  • Add the yeast mixture and stir until smooth.
  • Knead 5–7 minutes, adding water if needed.

Let the dough rise

  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in a warm area. Let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.

Prepare for frying

  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C).
  • Wet your hands or use a spoon to form small dough balls

Fry the loukoumades

  • Carefully drop dough balls into hot oil.
  • Fry 2–3 minutes until golden brown on all sides.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serve

  • Drizzle honey over the loukoumades and sprinkle them with cinnamon and chopped walnuts if desired.
