How to Make Vegan Taramosalata

This Greek vegan taramosalata is a plant-based take on the traditional fish roe dip, perfect for those following Lenten guidelines or a dairy-free diet.

It delivers the same rich, tangy, and savory flavors as the original taramosalata—without any animal products. Serve it with warm lagana bread, fresh veggies, or olives for a delicious appetizer!

Ingredients

  • 2 medium russet potatoes (or 1 cup stale bread, soaked and squeezed)
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tahini (adds creaminess and depth)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon white pepper (or black pepper)
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion (optional, for extra flavor)
  • Water or reserved potato water, as needed (for blending)

Instructions

Cook the potatoes

  • Peel and boil the potatoes until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.
  • Drain and let them cool slightly.

Blend the base

  • In a food processor or blender, combine the potatoes (or squeezed bread), garlic, lemon juice, and salt.
  • Blend until smooth.

Incorporate the olive oil

  • While blending, slowly drizzle in the olive oil to create a creamy, emulsified texture.

Adjust consistency & seasoning

  • Add a little water (or reserved potato water) if the mixture is too thick.
  • Taste and adjust with more lemon juice, salt, or garlic as needed.

Chill & serve

  • Transfer to a bowl, garnish with a drizzle of olive oil, and serve with warm pita bread, olives, or fresh veggies.

Tip: Traditional taramosalata gets its pinkish hue from fish roe, but for a visual touch, you can blend in a small piece of roasted red pepper!

This Vegan Greek Lenten Taramosalata offers a delicious twist on the traditional dip, offering the same creamy texture and bold Mediterranean flavors and made with simple, wholesome ingredients.

It’s a perfect addition to any Lenten table or meze spread. Whether served with warm pita or lagana bread, fresh vegetables, or olives, this dip is a flavorful and satisfying way to enjoy a classic Greek favorite in a completely vegan way. Give it a try, and bring a taste of Greece to your kitchen!
