I’ve seen pull-apart bread a thousand times on Pinterest, and I’ve always wanted to make it my way—using a dough that’s simple, reliable, and loved by my whole family.
Each bite reveals melty cheese tucked inside soft, pillowy pizza dough, with fragrant herbs and a golden, buttery crust. While this version is shaped like a Christmas tree, it works just as beautifully in a wreath, garland, or even a simple circle. It’s versatile, comforting, and utterly irresistible.

Using my pizza dough recipe (check it here), this bread is easy to make yet feels fancy enough to impress guests. The process is playful, the aroma fills the kitchen, and the first warm pull from the tray never fails to bring a smile.
I love this appetizer

This bread shines because it’s how cozy, comforting, and satisfying —without ever being complicated. Using my family-tested pizza dough, each ball comes out soft, airy, and perfect for holding gooey cheese.

I often make it outside the holidays too—shape it however I like, fill it with whatever I have on hand, and suddenly there you have it: an easy, crowd-pleasing centerpiece.
How I make it
I usually start by preparing my pizza dough using my tried-and-true recipe: flour, yeast, water, a touch of olive oil, and a little patience to let it rise until soft and airy—the kind of dough my whole family loves.
→ Here is my pizza dough recipe.

Short on time? You can absolutely use store-bought pizza dough to make this dish even faster without compromising flavor.
Once the pizza dough has rested and risen, I divide it into small, even balls. Each one gets a cube of mozzarella tucked inside, then I pinch the dough closed so the cheese stays snug as it bakes.
This part is fun and hands-on—the little dough balls feel soft and pillowy under your fingers, and it’s hard not to sneak a taste of cheese as you go.

Next comes the shaping. I arrange the balls into a Christmas tree, I don’t leave a lot of space between them. I want them to expand and attach while while baking for an authentic pull-apart effect!

You could also make a wreath, a garland, or a simple circle—whatever shape you like. Once the dough is shaped, I give it a quick brush with egg wash to help it turn golden and shiny in the oven.
While baking, the aroma of melting cheese, fresh herbs, and golden crust fills the kitchen—there’s nothing like it.

When it comes out of the oven, I brush it with melted herb butter and sprinkle grated Parmesan on top. The result is soft, cheesy, and fragrant bread that pulls apart effortlessly. Every bite is a little moment of joy, perfect for sharing.

- Herb swaps
Thyme, oregano, or Italian seasoning works well if you don’t have fresh herbs.

Wreaths, garlands, or simple rounds are just as fun.
