Halloween wasn’t really a big thing when I first moved to Crete. But over the years, as my kids started school, we met so many American families on the island who brought a bit of their spooky spirit with them — from pumpkin carving parties to trick-or-treat evenings through the village streets. Before long, October became one of my kids’ favorite times of the year.

Every autumn, our house turns into a mini haunted kitchen. The kids love helping out — stirring, decorating, sneaking bites when they think I’m not looking.
We make it a tradition to try new snacks each year, always mixing a bit of Greek flavor with classic American Halloween treats. It’s messy, loud, and full of laughter.

Golden puff pastry “fingers” with almond nails — creepy, flaky, and delicious.

- Brush with beaten egg and press an almond on the tip to make a “nail.”
- Bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve with ketchup “blood” for dipping.
3. Monster Pretzel Rods
Pretzel rods dipped in white chocolate and decorated with candy eyes and sprinkles for fun monster faces. Tasty, bitter-sweet, and silly, adults and kids love this bite!

Ingredients:
- 12 pretzel rods
- 1 cup white chocolate or candy melts
- Food coloring (optional)
- Candy eyes or assorted sprinkles
Steps:
- Melt the white chocolate (or you can also use candy melts) according to the package instructions.
- Use plain white for a mummy-like effect, or divide the chocolate into different bowls and tint with food coloring.
- Dip the pretzel rods halfway into the melted chocolate, then place them on parchment paper.
- While the coating is still soft, add candy eyes or sprinkles to make “monster faces.”
- Let them set until firm.
4. Pumpkin Hummus Dip
One of my family’s favorite dishes to serve at any Halloween party.

Ingredients:
- 1 can (400 g / 15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- ½ cup pumpkin purée
- 3 tbsp tahini
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1-2 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Pita chips or vegetable sticks, for serving
Steps:
- In a food processor, combine the chickpeas and the pumpkin purée.
- Add the tahini, olive oil, garlic, and lemon juice.
- Season with the spices: cumin, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Blend until smooth and creamy, adding a splash of water or extra olive oil if needed to reach your desired consistency.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Transfer to a serving bowl. Drizzle a little olive oil over the top and optionally garnish with pumpkin seeds or chopped parsley.
- Serve with pita chips or fresh vegetable sticks.
- Decorate the bowl with a spider web design that you can easily make with piping Greek yogurt or sour cream.
5. Ghost Pizza
A fun, spooky twist on classic Margherita pizza — melted mozzarella ghosts with black olive eyes!

Ingredients (makes 2 medium pizzas):
- 1 ready-made pizza dough (or homemade)
- 1 cup tomato pizza sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 6–8 black olives, sliced for eyes
- Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
- Olive oil, for brushing
- Optional ingredients: tomato slices, onion slices, or other veggies.
Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 220°C (~425°F). Prepare a baking sheet or pizza stone.
- Roll out the pizza dough to your desired size and thickness.
- Spread some tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust. If you’re also using other veggies (onions, tomatoes), add them now.
- Tear mozzarella into irregular shapes that resemble ghost figures and place them evenly on top of the sauce. (You can also use a cookie cutter with a ghost shape to cut the cheese).
- Use sliced black olives to create “eyes” on each ghost.
- Optionally, brush the crust lightly with olive oil for a golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is melted and slightly bubbly.
- Remove from oven, let cool for a few minutes, and garnish with fresh basil if desired.
- Slice and serve immediately — the ghosts will be melty, fun, and spooky!
6. Monster Fruit Platter
A colorful, spooky, and healthy Halloween treat — fruit monsters, ghosts, and pumpkins your kids will love!

Ingredients:
- 2–3 bananas, peeled and halved
- 4–6 tangerines or clementines, peeled
- 1 cup blackberries
- 1 cup mango chunks
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced
- 1 cup grapes or blueberries
- Sugar or candy eyes (store-bought or homemade)
Optional: small cookie cutters for fun shapes
Steps:
- Prepare the fruit
Slice bananas in half lengthwise for ghost shapes. Peel tangerines or clementines to resemble mini pumpkins. Slice strawberries into thin strips for “monster tongues.” - Assemble ghosts
Place wooden skewer sticks on banana halves and set on the platter slightly angled. Add two candy eyes on each banana to create ghost faces. - Make pumpkins
Arrange peeled tangerines on the platter as mini pumpkins. Optionally, add small pieces of grape stems or mint leaves as “stems.” - Create colorful skewers
Thread mango chunks and blackberries alternately onto small skewers or toothpicks for a colorful black and orange touch. - Tongues and details
Use thin strawberry slices in front of some fruits to look like monster tongues. Scatter additional grapes, blueberries, or blackberries around for extra color and texture.
Add candy eyes to some grapes, tangerines, or other fruits for fun “monster faces.” Make sure the platter looks lively and colorful — mix heights, colors, and shapes. - Serve immediately or cover lightly and refrigerate until ready.
