Valentine’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show how much you care, and what better way to do so than through the rich flavors of Cretan cuisine? Crete’s culinary history is steeped in time-honored recipes, and its desserts are as rich in love as they are in taste.

Think of honey-soaked pastries and aromatic spiced treats… no matter your taste, Cretan sweets have been passed down through generations, each telling a story of tradition and affection.

In this collection, I’ve curated seven of the island’s most beloved desserts, each crafted with care and love—just like the perfect Valentine’s gesture.

1. Chocolate Baklava with Cretan Thyme Honey

Ingredients:

  • 500g phyllo pastry sheets
  • 200g walnuts, finely chopped
  • 200g almonds, finely chopped
  • 100g dark chocolate, grated
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 200g unsalted butter, melted
  • 300g Cretan thyme honey
  • 100g sugar
  • 150ml water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Preparation:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Combine the chopped walnuts, almonds, grated chocolate, cinnamon, and cloves in a bowl.
  • Brush a baking pan with melted butter.
  • Layer half of the phyllo sheets, brushing each with butter.
  • Spread the nut and chocolate mixture evenly over the phyllo.
  • Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top, brushing each with butter.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes.
  • Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
  • Combine the honey, sugar, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Pour the hot syrup over the cooled baklava. Allow it to absorb before serving.

2. Cretan Kalitsounia with Sweet Cheese and Rose Petals

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 200ml warm water
  • 500g fresh mizithra cheese (or ricotta)
  • 100g powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Edible rose petals for garnish
  • Honey for drizzling

Preparation:

  • In a bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add olive oil and warm water, kneading until a soft dough forms.
  • Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  • In another bowl, combine the cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Roll out the dough thinly and cut into circles.
  • Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture in the center of each circle.
  • Fold and press the edges to seal.
  • Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 20-25 minutes until golden.

3. Almond and Orange Blossom Loukoumades

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 400ml warm water
  • 100g almonds, finely chopped
  • Oil for frying
  • 200g honey
  • 2 tablespoons orange blossom water

Preparation:

  • In a bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit until frothy.
  • Add the flour and salt, mixing to form a batter. Cover and let it rise for 1 hour.
  • Heat oil in a deep pan.
  • Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying until golden.
  • In a saucepan, warm the honey and orange blossom water.
  • Dip the fried loukoumades into the honey mixture, then sprinkle with chopped almonds.

4. Dark Chocolate and Pomegranate Mousse with Raki

Ingredients:

  • 200g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 3 eggs, separated
  • 50g sugar
  • 200ml heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons raki (Cretan spirit)
  • Pomegranate seeds for garnish

Preparation:

  • Melt the dark chocolate over a double boiler. Let it cool slightly.
  • In a bowl, beat the egg yolks with sugar until pale.
  • Add the melted chocolate and raki, mixing well.
  • In separate bowls, whip the egg whites to stiff peaks and the cream to soft peaks.
  • Gently fold the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture, followed by the egg whites.
  • Divide into serving glasses and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.

5. Sesame and Honey Bars with Dark Chocolate Drizzle (Pasteli)

Ingredients:

  • 300g sesame seeds
  • 200g Cretan thyme honey
  • 100g dark chocolate, melted

Preparation:

  • Toast the sesame seeds in a dry pan until golden.
  • In a saucepan, heat the honey until it reaches a boil.
  • Add the toasted sesame seeds and mix well.
  • Pour the mixture onto a parchment-lined tray, spreading evenly.
  • Once slightly cooled, cut into bars.
  • Drizzle with melted dark chocolate.
  • Allow to set before serving.

6. Rose-flavored Semolina Halva with Pistachios

Ingredients:

  • 200g coarse semolina
  • 100g olive oil
  • 200g sugar
  • 500ml water
  • 2 tablespoons rose water
  • 100g pistachios, chopped

Preparation:

  • In a saucepan, heat the olive oil and add the semolina, stirring continuously until golden brown.
  • In another pan, dissolve the sugar in water and bring to a boil.
  • Add the rose water.
  • Gradually pour the sugar syrup into the semolina mixture, stirring carefully as it will bubble.
  • Cook on low heat until the mixture thickens and begins to pull away from the sides of the pan.
  • Transfer to a mold, sprinkle with pistachios, and let cool.
  • Slice into pieces and serve.

7. Carob Brownies with Walnuts and Olive Oil

Ingredients:

  • 200g carob powder
  • 100g all-purpose flour
  • 150ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 150g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 100g walnuts, chopped

Preparation:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a bowl, mix the carob powder, flour, cinnamon, and baking powder.
  • In another bowl, whisk the olive oil and sugar until smooth.
  • Add the eggs one at a time.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined.
  • Fold in the walnuts.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared tray and bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let cool, slice into squares, and serve.
