This is perfect for busy moms who don’t enjoy making difficult cakes and still want to treat their snack-hungry kids. But it’s also great for busy students or if you crave dessert without the effort.

What makes this brownie special isn’t just its simplicity—it’s the fact that it actually works, and works beautifully. No flour, no butter, no sugar (well, unless you want to)—just a few humble ingredients and a microwave.

Let’s talk about those ingredients: apples, eggs, and dark chocolate powder. That’s it. The apples bring natural sweetness and moisture, the eggs provide structure and richness, and the chocolate… well, it’s chocolate. You can’t go wrong with that.

You might be wondering, “Apples in brownies?” But don’t worry—they melt right into the batter, lending a gentle sweetness and a subtle tartness that beautifully balances the dark cocoa.

Ingredients are few and simple: apples, eggs, and dark chocolate.

That said, if you’re not used to the pure, slightly bitter flavor of dark chocolate, feel free to stir in a tablespoon of cane sugar into the batter. It won’t compromise the health-conscious base, but it will soften the flavor just enough for those with a sweeter tooth. Think of it as a gentle nudge towards decadence.

Let’s Get Descriptive: How to Make It

Start with two apples. Any kind will work, though something with a natural sweetness, like Fuji or Gala, is ideal. Peel them if you want a smoother texture, but it’s not absolutely necessary.

Core them and chop them into chunks. Pop those chunks into a blender or food processor and blitz until you have a smooth apple puree. If you don’t have a blender, grating the apples very finely will work too, though it’ll be a bit more rustic.

Crack two eggs into a bowl. Whisk them lightly—nothing too vigorous, just enough to break them up (this is optional, since your blender will be doing the same job so that you can pour them in the blender with the apples).

Blend or stir the apple puree and the eggs until you have a smooth, pale yellow mixture.

Now comes the chocolate. Add your powdered dark chocolate into the mix. Stir gently but thoroughly. You’ll see the batter turn a rich, velvety brown.

It will smell incredible even before you’ve cooked it. If you’re opting for that extra spoonful of cane sugar, now’s the time to mix it in.

Transfer the batter into a microwave-safe dish. A ceramic ramekin or small glass bowl works well. Smooth out the top with a spoon and get ready to microwave.

Presentation Is Everything

In my photo, this brownie is served with a soft swirl of Chantilly cream and some fresh strawberries—probably my favorite pairing when it comes to dark chocolate.

The lightness of the cream cuts through the richness of the brownie, while the strawberries brighten up the plate. But if you’re feeling playful, there are so many other ways to serve this:

  • A dollop of Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey for a breakfast-like twist.
  • A scoop of vanilla ice cream and crushed walnuts for an indulgent dessert.
  • A splash of espresso and a shaving of dark chocolate for an affogato-inspired plate.
  • Raspberries and mint for a summery, refreshing finish.
  • Even a spoonful of nut butter on top turns this into a protein-packed snack.

The beauty here is that even with these additions, you’re still working from an unbelievably minimalist base.
