The Greek Delight of Midia Saganaki
Saganaki is a popular Greek cooking style that refers to dishes prepared in a small two-handled frying pan. While cheese saganaki is widely known, the seafood variation, especially with mussels, is an absolute delight.
Midia Saganaki is a dish found in many Greek seaside tavernas, featuring plump mussels cooked in a rich, spiced tomato sauce and finished with crumbled feta cheese. It is a dish that pairs beautifully with crusty bread, allowing you to soak up every drop of its flavorful sauce.
A splash of Cretan tsikoudia or ouzo in the sauce adds a distinct Greek touch. Let’s see how to prepare this surprisingly easy (and incredibly delicious) dish!
Ingredients for Mussels Saganaki
- Extra virgin olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 red pepper, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- A pinch of chili flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
- 2 fresh tomatoes, diced
- 1/4 cup tsikoudia or ouzo (optional)
- 500g frozen mussels, cleaned and thawed
- 100g feta cheese, crumbled
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish
- Salt and black pepper (adjust to taste)

How to Make Mussels Saganaki
- Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and the garlic.
- Sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Let the garlic become fragrant.

- Add the red pepper, stirring occasionally until the pepper softens.
- Stir in the dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and a pinch of chili flakes.
- Cook for another minute to release the flavors.
- Add the tomato paste and stir well, allowing it to caramelize slightly for richer depth.

- Add the mussels to the pan and gently stir to coat them in the sauce.
- Cover and let them cook for about 10 minutes, or until they are fully heated through.

- Pour in the canned tomatoes and fresh diced tomatoes.
- If using, add the tsikoudia or ouzo at this stage.
- Stir well and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing it to thicken and develop its flavors.

- Lower the flame and immediately crumble the feta cheese over the dish, allowing it to slightly melt into the sauce.

- Remove from heat.
- Sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley and serve hot with crusty bread for dipping.

Tips for the Perfect Greek-Style Mussels Saganaki
- Use high-quality canned tomatoes for a rich and flavorful sauce.
- If using fresh mussels instead of frozen, ensure they are properly cleaned and discard any that remain closed after cooking.
- Allowing the tomato paste to slightly caramelize before adding other ingredients enhances the depth of flavor.
- Adding tsikoudia or ouzo gives the sauce an authentic Greek touch, but it can be omitted if preferred.
- Feta cheese should be added at the last moment to preserve its texture and slightly creamy contrast against the robust tomato sauce.

Midia Saganaki is a perfect dish for seafood lovers that can be served as a starter or a main course. And, as you can see, this recipe is an easy yet impressive way to enjoy mussels in a rich Mediterranean-style sauce. Pair it with a glass of white wine and enjoy the flavors of the Aegean on your plate.
