Citrus, Chocolate & Yogurt: A Match Made in the Mediterranean
This cake is inspired by the rustic charm of Greek village desserts: simple, honest ingredients like Greek yogurt, orange zest, and olive oil come together to form something far more delicious than you’d expect. The added touch? Dark chocolate chips, which melt into the batter for added flavor in every bite!
As I write this recipe, I’m happily tasting a warm slice of this cake next to my computer — and yes, it’s just so good!

This cake has no glaze — for me, the natural sweetness of Cretan oranges was enough. Think of it as a cross between a sponge cake and a tea cake, perfect for a mid-morning snack or a late-night indulgence with a glass of milk (or even a sip of tsikoudia, if you’re feeling truly Cretan).
How to Make this Orange & Greek Yogurt Cake
Start by preheating your oven and preparing a loaf pan or cake pan, greased and lightly floured so the cake slips out easily. Then, whisk together your dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, baking soda, and a touch of salt.

In another bowl, mix the wet ingredients: Greek yogurt, sugar, eggs, extra virgin olive oil, and the juice and zest of a fresh orange. The yogurt gives the cake a rich, creamy base while the orange adds a bright aroma and flavor.

Slowly combine the dry and wet mixtures to form a smooth batter. Once it’s well-blended, gently fold in a generous handful of dark chocolate chips — just enough to add pockets of melty richness without overwhelming the citrus flavor.

Pour the batter into your pan and bake until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool before slicing, and that’s it — a fuss-free, rustic Mediterranean dessert with a hint of indulgence.

Stir in a handful of chopped walnuts or almonds for added crunch.
- Try blood orange
Use blood orange zest and juice for a deeper, more aromatic citrus flavor.
