During my years living in Italy, I made this pasta salad countless times. It quickly became a staple in my kitchen because it’s so easy and quick to prepare, and it takes simple ingredients.

It’s inspired by the beloved insalata caprese but turned into a more complete and nourishing meal with the addition of pasta, tuna, and olives.

Now that I live in Crete, I still make this salad regularly. It’s perfect for the warm island climate, easy to throw together with ingredients I almost always have in the fridge or pantry, and loved by kids and adults alike. I make it for a light lunch, a beach picnic, or a no-fuss dinner. And this dish always delivers… make it with me!

Why This Pasta Salad Works

This is Mediterranean simplicity at its best. Juicy tomatoes (cherry are better but any tomato works well), mozzarella, olives, and tuna come together with short pasta and a generous drizzle of olive oil to create a balanced dish that’s fresh, flavorful, and filling.

It’s quick to assemble, doesn’t require fancy ingredients, and travels well—perfect for summer days or whenever you need something fast, healthy, and crowd-pleasing.

Variations & Tips

This is one of the most versatile salads you can make when the temperatures soar, and variations are endless, from added sweet corn and bell peppers to a spicy touch. These are some of my variations… leave a comment with yours!

  • Caprese upgrade
Drizzle with balsamic glaze for a sweet contrast.
  • Creamy twist
Stir in a spoonful of mayo or Greek yogurt.
  • Make it kid-friendly
Use mini pasta shapes and skip the olives if needed.
  • Protein swap
Try chickpeas, grilled chicken, or hard-boiled eggs.
  • Boost the greens
Add cucumber, bell peppers, or arugula for extra crunch and color.
  • Pesto power
Swap the olive oil and oregano for a spoonful or two of basil pesto. It adds a punch of herbaceous flavor and makes the whole salad even creamier and more aromatic.
  • Avocado
Add half an avocado, diced or mashed, to the salad. It blends well with the tuna and mozzarella and adds healthy fats and a rich, buttery texture.
  • Cucumber & feta refresh
Substitute mozzarella with crumbled feta and toss in chopped cucumber. It gives the salad a Greek island twist—perfect if you want something even brighter and saltier.
  • No-pasta version (Low-Carb)
Skip the pasta entirely and turn it into a chopped salad by adding extra tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, or baby spinach, and an extra helping of tuna. Still satisfying and summer-friendly.
  • Spicy kick
Add a pinch of chili flakes or finely sliced fresh chili for some heat. Great with black olives and oregano, especially if you want a bolder, grown-up flavor.

Back when I lived in Italy, or now here in Crete, this pasta salad has been a delicious constant—simple, wholesome, and full of flavor from ingredients I always have on hand. Are you making this simple dish too?
