You can serve hummus as a dip, a sandwich spread, or a topping for your favorite meals. Homemade hummus is fresher, more customizable, and often more cost-effective than store-bought varieties.
What You’ll Need to Make A Delicious Hummus
Ingredients include a can of chickpeas( drained and rinsed), which can be replaced with a cup and a half of cooked chickpeas. You will also use tahini (a nutty sesame seed paste, very common in Middle Eastern cuisine), as well as lemon, minced garlic, extra virgin olive oil, and cumin (if you enjoy its flavor).
I often garnish with paprika and parsley, but they are optional. Sumac is another common spice used when garnishing a hummus dish.
I also suggest using a food processor or high-speed blender to make the process much easier. Let’s now see how to make hummus…!

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Hummus
1. Prepare the chickpeas
For the creamiest hummus, remove the skins from the chickpeas. While this step is optional, it can make a noticeable difference in texture. To do this, rub the chickpeas gently between your fingers or between two towels to loosen and peel off the skins.

2. Blend the garlic and lemon juice
In your food processor, combine the minced garlic and fresh lemon juice. Blend for about 30 seconds to allow the garlic to infuse into the lemon juice, mellowing its sharpness.

3. Add Tahini and Blend Again
Add the tahini to the garlic-lemon mixture and blend until smooth and creamy. This step is key to achieving a light and fluffy hummus. If the mixture thickens too much, add a tablespoon of water to loosen it.
>> NOTE: I have many times skipped this step (using Tahini) when I didn’t have it in my pantry, and the result was still so good!

4. Incorporate the chickpeas
Add the chickpeas to the processor, along with the cumin (if using) and salt. Blend the mixture, drizzling in olive oil while the processor is running. Scrape down the sides as needed to ensure everything is evenly combined.

5. Adjust the Consistency
To achieve the desired consistency, add 1 tablespoon of cold water at a time, blending after each addition until the hummus is smooth and creamy. The cold water helps emulsify the tahini, resulting in a lighter texture.
6. Taste and Adjust Seasoning
Taste your hummus and adjust the seasoning as needed. Add olive oil, lemon juice, or salt to suit your preferences.

7. Serve and Garnish
Transfer the hummus to a serving bowl and create a small well in the center with a spoon. Drizzle with abundant olive oil and sprinkle with paprika, sumac, or fresh herbs like parsley. Serve with pita bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
