Best Thanksgiving Appetizers to Impress Your Guests from the First Bite

I always believe a great Thanksgiving starts with a thoughtful appetizer spread — it’s the perfect way to welcome guests and whet everyone’s appetite before the feast begins. Small bites like cranberry brie cups, bacon-wrapped dates, and pumpkin hummus set the tone and bring that festive vibe to the table.

I love making appetizers that are easy to serve and won’t fill everyone up before the main arrives. For me, it’s all about small bites packed with seasonal flavors — think cranberries, squash, fresh herbs — and offering a mix of hot and cold options so the table looks abundant but still relaxed.

I haven’t had many chances to celebrate Thanksgiving here on the island, but when I have — usually with Greek-American friends who live in Chania — it’s always been a real feast full of laughter and good food. Over the years, I’ve learned some of the best appetizer recipes that bring that festive spirit alive, and I’m excited to share them with you here.

  • 120 g (½ cup) cranberry sauce (fresh or canned)
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (optional)
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish
  • Honey for drizzling (optional)

Alternatives to cranberry sauce:

  • Raspberry jam or preserves
  • Fig jam
  • Cherry preserves
  • Pomegranate molasses (use sparingly for tartness)

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (~350°F).
  • Place the mini phyllo tart shells on a baking sheet.
Put a cube of brie inside each phyllo shell.
  • Bake for about 8–10 minutes, or until the brie is melted and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and immediately spoon a small amount of cranberry sauce on top of each melted brie cup.

>> Optional: Sprinkle fresh thyme leaves on top and drizzle with honey for extra flavor.

  • Garnish each cup with a small fresh rosemary sprig for an aromatic touch.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

2. Maple Glazed Bacon-Wrapped Dates

Sweet dates filled with creamy goat cheese, wrapped in crispy bacon, and brushed with a sticky maple glaze. Okay, I’ll admit—it’s a classic ‘80s recipe straight from this Gen X cook… but honestly, I still love it!

Ingredients:

  • 24 dates (Medjool variety if you can find them), pitted
  • 150 g (5 oz) goat cheese
  • 12 slices of bacon, cut in half
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • Toothpicks for securing

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (375°F).
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Carefully stuff each date with about a teaspoon of goat cheese.
Then, wrap each stuffed date with half a slice of bacon and secure with a toothpick.
  • Place the wrapped dates on the prepared baking sheet.
Brush each date generously with maple syrup.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, turning once halfway through, until the bacon is crisp and caramelized.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

>> Variation: You can substitute the figs for dates in these bacon bites.

3. Stuffed Mushrooms

One of my favorite ways to serve mushrooms (check them out here and here). For Thanksgiving, let’s make these mushroom caps filled with a savory mix of garlic, herbs, breadcrumbs, and cheese, baked until golden and bubbling!

Ingredients:

  • 24 large white or cremini mushrooms, stems removed and chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably fresh)
  • 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup cream cheese, Cretan myzithra, or ricotta (optional, for extra creaminess)

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 180°C (375°F).
  • Clean the mushrooms and carefully remove the stems.
Chop the stems finely and set aside.
  • Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the garlic and the finely chopped mushroom stems, sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened.
Remove from heat and stir in breadcrumbs, Parmesan, parsley, salt, pepper, and cream cheese if using.
    Mix well.
  • Spoon the filling into each mushroom cap, pressing lightly to pack.
  • Arrange the stuffed mushrooms on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes until mushrooms are tender and the filling is golden on top.
  • Serve warm.

4. Mini Turkey Meatballs

Bite-sized turkey meatballs flavored with sage and thyme, served with cranberry dipping sauce.

Ingredients:

For the Meatballs:

  • 500 g ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp fresh sage, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

For the Cranberry Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup cranberry sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Instructions:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey with the breadcrumbs, the onion, the garlic, the egg, and season with sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
    Mix gently until combined.
Shape the mixture into small, bite-sized meatballs (about 2.5 cm in diameter).
  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Cook the meatballs in batches, turning frequently, until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10–12 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, whisk together cranberry sauce (if you find, add in whole cranberries for added texture), orange juice, and Dijon mustard to create the dipping sauce.
  • Serve meatballs warm, drizzled with the cranberry dipping sauce and extra sauce on the side.

5. Herbed Cheese Ball with Pecans

A creamy cheese mixture rolled in chopped pecans and fresh herbs, perfect with crackers. If pecans are not available in your area, simple walnuts or almonds are a good option too.

  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup pecans, finely chopped (can be replaced by almonds or walnuts too)

>> Check this post to learn to better preserve fresh herbs.

Instructions:

  • In a medium bowl, combine the cream (or goat) cheese, the cheddar, parsley, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.
    Mix until well blended.
  • Shape the mixture into a ball.
  • Spread the chopped pecan nuts on a plate or shallow bowl.
  • Roll the cheese ball in the chopped pecans until evenly coated.
  • Wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to firm up before serving.
  • Serve with assorted crackers, Greek pita bread, or a sliced baguette slightly toasted and rubbed with garlic oil.

  • 1/2 cup fresh cranberries (or frozen, thawed)

  • Serve warm with crackers or a sliced baguette.

9. Pumpkin Hummus

Smooth hummus blended with pumpkin purée and spices, served with pita chips. A seasonal and satisfying starter.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can (400 g / 15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin purée (canned or homemade)
  • 3 tbsp tahini

  • In a food processor, combine the chickpeas with the pumpkin purée.
Add the tahini, the olive oil, the garlic, and the lemon juice. Season with all the spices (cumin, cinnamon, and nutmeg).

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

10. Greek-Styled Thanksgiving Appetizer made of Feta and Honey Phyllo Bites

Of course, our traditional Greek touch could not be missing in this variety of appetizers. Here’s one I simply love because it’s simple and delicious: Feta cheese wrapped in phyllo, drizzled with honey, and sprinkled with fresh thyme — a perfect balance of savory and sweet for your holiday appetizer spread.

Ingredients:

  • 150 g (5 oz) feta cheese, cut into small rectangular pieces
  • 6 sheets phyllo dough, thawed
  • 3 tbsp melted butter (or olive oil)
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves
  • Sesame seeds (to decorate, optional)
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  • Lay one sheet of phyllo on a clean surface and brush it lightly with melted butter.
Place another sheet on top and brush again with butter.
Cut the layered phyllo sheets into rectangles large enough to wrap around each feta piece (previously cut into rectangles of 3 x 2 cm).
  • Place a piece of feta on one end of each rectangle, and sprinkle lightly with black pepper.
Fold the sides over the feta and roll tightly to enclose the cheese completely.
Place the wrapped feta rolls seam side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops with more melted butter.
You can sprinkle the feta with sesame seeds before baking (optional)
  • Bake for 15–20 minutes or until golden and crisp.
  • Remove from oven, drizzle with honey, and sprinkle fresh thyme over the top.
  • Serve warm.
